Culture Fit Kills Innovation: Hire for Growth, Not Comfort

Culture fit says "no" to change. Good luck innovating with that mindset.

No startup succeeded with people who echo the status quo.

Culture fit focuses on comfort over skills.
Unless you build an echo chamber composed of a team of clones.
Safe. Agreeable. Uninspired.

❌ Do not hire people who think like you
❌ Do not hire to mirror you
✅ Find the ones with fresh takes and unique experiences

Social compatibility has no strategic value.
Resilience comes from those who value ideas. Not only tolerate them.

Here is how I do it:

1️⃣ Be clear with the candidate on values and culture gaps
2️⃣ Structure an unbiased hiring process with targeted questions
3️⃣ Focus on authenticity, adaptability, and openness
4️⃣ Evaluate genuine curiosity and ease being outside boundaries
5️⃣ Check ability to use feedback with an outcome-driven mindset

Examples:

What is missing from our culture? How can you help us solve it?
Describe a time you contested a group's assumptions.
What values can you add to our company? Why?
Tell me how you learned from someone very different from yourself.
Describe a tough feedback you got. How did you process it emotionally?

If someone didn't "fit," double-check the box you put them in.
